What you need to know about this trending, Hollywood-approved demi-fine jewellery designer

Mumbai-based designer Nitya Arora is gaining attention for using unusual materials—think acrylic and brass combined with semi-precious stones—in jewellery. From Nicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian to Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Katy Perry, Arora’s brand is the talk of the town.

Arora attributes her hugely successful line of maximalist jewellery to boredom. “After graduating from Parsons School of Design [with a degree in mixed media], my creative juices were flowing and I needed to channel them into something,” she says. It was only fitting then that in 2008 when she launched her brand, her pieces offered “a refreshing alternative to the precious jewellery dominating markets of India”. Valliyan’s designs, which are at the intersection of Indian tradition and international aesthetic, offer oversized kundanstones, laser-cut acrylic in chunky designs, motifs in different colours and texture—and reflect Arora’s love for travel.

Though her inspiration comes from globetrotting the world, the heart of her brand lies closer to home. Growing up in South Mumbai, Arora was exposed to her first influences through the Art Deco architectural styles in the streets of “Bombay”.  She found the muse of Valliyan in her grandmother, and her chiffon sarees, delicate bangles, and classic Punjabi balliyan[earrings in English; the word later translated into the brand name].

With a vision for her label to mean more than a jewellery brand, she wants to provoke people to think and stand for something. And Valliyan’s organic collection helps her achieve that. Hundred percent natural, it includes one-of-a-kind, beautiful necklaces and earrings made from brass and cane, which are meticulously handcrafted by Mumbai’s local craftsmen and artisans. “It is jewellery with a soul and excitement about it like no other,” says Arora.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
