Tetra Watch. Michael Aversano una passione nata dalla voglia di rinascita
09.06.2010. Il giorno in cui, per Michael Aversano, tutto è cambiato. A causa di un grave incidente stradale, Michael, allora ventunenne, diventa tetraplegico. Un cambio di vita radicale che l’ha portato inevitabilmente ad un bivio: scegliere l’autocommiserazione o reagire affrontando il peggiore degli ostacoli in un’opportunità di rinascita? Grazie alla sua immensurabile forza di volontà, ha affrontato di petto ciò che il destino gli ha riservato e, con coraggio, ha trasformato “quel buio” in un’idea luminosa che ha concretizzato nel Progetto Tetra Watch.

Nel nome ho voluto rimarcare il mio stato fisico “Tetra” e la parola “Watch”, la mia passione per il mondo delle lancette che avevo ancor prima che quell’evento mi cambiasse radicalmente la vita. Chi sceglie un “mio” orologio sceglie di portare al polso un progetto di vita, di condividere l’approccio di chi, nonostante le innegabili difficoltà quotidiane, sorride alla vita e ringrazia. Vorrei che tutti riflettessero sull’importanza della vita, del non dare nulla per scontato e di cercare di creare opportunità anche laddove non sembrano esserci. Il mio motto per affrontare ciò che mi è accaduto è #carichiebriosi. Senza questa positività andare lontano credo sia molto più difficile.
Una passione, quella per gli orologi, che si è trasformata in un lavoro che ti sta regalando grandi soddisfazioni. Qual’è stato il primo orologio che hai indossato ed il primo che hai realizzato?
Ho un ricordo ben preciso del primo orologio. Mi fu regalato alla cresima: era un Sector nero e giallo, quadrante nero con contatori crono gialli e cinturino in pelle nera con una striscia centrale gialla. Da quel momento è nata la mia passione. Il primo segnatempo che ho realizzato è stato il Diver1 con una cassa dal design unico e quadranti di colori diversi. Ho voluto creare un qualcosa di nuovo, che fosse riconosciuto e che si differenziasse dagli altri.
Su cassa e fondello dei tuoi orologi hai voluto rendere omaggio alla tua compagna di vita a due/quattro ruote.
Ho voluto dedicare i miei orologi alla mia nuova condizione di vita che mi ha permesso di dedicarmi a questo splendido viaggio, creare orologi, chi lo avrebbe mai detto! La cassa con i suoi quattro spigoli si riferisce ai quattro arti colpiti dalla mielolesione. Purtroppo, avendo rotto la terza e la quarta vertebra cervicale, sono stati colpiti tutti e quattro gli arti. Se non fosse successo questo non sarei mai riuscito a creare un mio brand di orologeria. Sul fondello invece ho voluto disegnare una carrozzina stilizzata perché ormai la mia tetraplegia è uno stile di vita e, può sembrare strano ma vi garantisco che ringrazio questa vita e quello che ha voluto darmi
All’apparenza, almeno per i polsi più esili, l’orologio sembrerebbe un po’ “ingombrante” ma, una volta indossato, grazie allo studio di cassa ed anse, non lo è.
È così e mi fa piacere che anche tu portandolo sul tuo polso minuto, l’abbia notato. Mi piacerebbe vedere un mio Tetra Watch al polso di uomini e donne. Anche se, prima o poi, un orologio ad hoc per un polso femminile lo presenterò.
Ad oggi proponi tre collezioni: un Diver, testato a 100 metri/10atm, un GMT, il TMT Tetra mean time, e l’Elegance, il tuo dress watch. Ciò che li accomuna è la possibilità di personalizzare l’orologio.
Si può far incidere le proprie iniziali con il laser o in oro 18kt e scegliere il colore di quadrante che più si addice alla propria personalità. Ad oggi si può scegliere tra color arancio, bordeaux, nero, verde e verde acqua. È disponibile la versione anche con quadrante nero laccato lucido con 4 brilli incastonati (a ore 12, 3, 6 e 9).
Quale è oggi il tuo rapporto con il tempo?
Penso che il tempo sia vita. Ora ho un bellissimo rapporto con lui. Nonostante passi lunghi periodi sdraiato sul letto, lui vola via inesorabilmente… Penso che bisognerebbe sfruttarlo nel miglior modo possibile perché è l’unica cosa che non torna indietro e non si può recuperare.
Con i tuoi orologi, con il tuo modo di affrontare la vita, che messaggio vorresti arrivasse?
Vorrei dire a tutti che, nonostante la vita a volte ci metta davanti difficoltà che sembrano intramontabili, se uno ce la mette tutta può farcela! Vorrei far passare il messaggio che non bisogna mai arrendersi, che bisogna sempre credere nei sogni. Mi piacerebbe che la gente vedesse sempre il bicchiere mezzo pieno perché da una “brutta avventura” può sempre venire fuori qualcosa di straordinario! Bisogna impegnarsi molto e crederci.

9.06.2010. The day when, for Michael Aversano, everything changed. Due to a serious car accident, Michael, then 21 years old, became a quadriplegic. A radical life change that inevitably brought him to a crossroads: choose self-pity or react by facing the worst of obstacles in an opportunity for rebirth? Thanks to his immensurable willpower, he faced head-on what fate had in store for him and, with courage, turned “that darkness” into a bright idea that he materialized into the Tetra Watch Project.

In the name I wanted to remark my physical state “Tetra” and the word “Watch,” my passion for the world of hands that I had even before that event radically changed my life. Those who choose “my” watch choose to wear a life project on their wrist, to share the approach of those who, despite undeniable daily difficulties, smile at life and give thanks. I would like everyone to reflect on the importance of life, of taking nothing for granted and trying to create opportunities even where there do not seem to be any. My motto for dealing with what has happened to me is #burdenedblessed. Without this positivity going far I think is much more difficult.
A passion, that for watches, that has turned into a job that is giving you great satisfaction. What was the first watch you wore and the first one you made?
I have a distinct memory of the first watch. It was given to me at my confirmation: it was a black and yellow Sector, black dial with yellow chrono counters and black leather strap with a yellow central stripe. From that moment my passion was born. The first timepiece I made was the Diver1 with a uniquely designed case and dials in different colors. I wanted to create something new that would be recognized and stand out from others.
On the case and back of your watches, you wanted to pay homage to your two/four-wheeled life partner.
I wanted to dedicate my watches to my new condition in life that has allowed me to devote myself to this wonderful journey, creating watches, who knew! The case with its four edges refers to the four limbs affected by myelopathy. Unfortunately, having broken the third and fourth cervical vertebrae, all four limbs were affected. If this had not happened I would never have been able to create my own brand of watchmaking. On the case back instead I wanted to draw a stylized wheelchair because now my quadriplegia is a way of life and, it may sound strange but I guarantee that I thank this life and what it wanted to give me.
On the surface, at least for slimmer wrists, the watch would seem a bit “bulky,” but once worn, thanks to the study of the case and lugs, it is not.
It is, and I am glad that you, too, wearing it on your petite wrist, noticed it. I would love to see a Tetra Watch of mine on the wrists of men and women. Although, sooner or later, an ad hoc watch for a woman’s wrist I will present it.
To date you offer three collections: a Diver, tested to 100 meters/10atm, a GMT, the TMT Tetra mean time, and the Elegance, your dress watch. What they have in common is the ability to personalize the watch.
You can have your initials laser engraved or in 18kt gold and choose the dial color that best suits your personality. To date, one can choose from orange, burgundy, black, green and teal.
There is also a version available with a glossy black lacquered dial set with 4 brilliants (at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock).
What is your relationship with time today?
I think time is life. I now have a beautiful relationship with it. Despite the fact that I spend long periods lying on the bed, he flies away inexorably… I think one should make the best use of it because it is the only thing that does not come back and cannot be recovered.
With your watches, with your way of dealing with life, what message would you like to get across?
I would like to tell everyone that although life sometimes puts us in front of difficulties that seem timeless, if one tries hard one can make it! I would like to get the message across that one should never give up, that one should always believe in dreams. I would like people to always see the glass half full because something extraordinary can always come out of a “bad adventure”! You have to work hard and believe in it.
