Sotheby’s Ginevra: un Daytona John Player Special del ’69 battuto per circa 2 milioni e mezzo di dollari

Il Rolex Daytona fa nuovamente parlare di sé, questa volta per essere stato aggiudicato all’asta da Sotheby’s Ginevra per CHF 2.238.000 / $ 2.491.655. Il nuovo record mondiale riguarda il Daytona John Player Special del 1969, un’eccezionale referenza 6241 “Il migliore visto sul mercato negli ultimi 10 anni o più“, come ha dichiarato Mikael Wallhagen, Responsabile Orologi di Sotheby’s a Ginevra, che ha aggiunto “Quando ho avuto tra le mani questo Daytona John Player Special del 1969, ho capito subito che si trattava di un pezzo estremamente speciale. Non solo per la sua ricercata referenza, ma anche perché era ed è tuttora il miglior esemplare di questa referenza che abbia mai visto. Un sentimento che è riecheggiato tra gli appassionati di orologi e soprattutto tra i collezionisti di Daytona ovunque sia stato esposto, durante i suoi viaggi nelle nostre sedi mondiali, in vista della vendita di oggi a Ginevra. Per essere un orologio di quasi 55 anni, è in condizioni straordinariamente buone, con tutte le sue parti intatte, e non è mai stato sottoposto a manutenzione. Ha anche il vantaggio di presentare alcuni degli elementi di design più rari che si possano trovare in qualsiasi referenza JPS. Si tratta di un vero e proprio unicorno Daytona, il modo perfetto per completare i nostri Orologi Importanti che hanno celebrato i 60 anni di Daytona con una serie di referenze provenienti da tutti i suoi sei decenni“.

Si ritiene che siano state prodotte 3000 referenze 6241 e solo 300 con cassa in oro giallo 18 carati. Di questi, solo una piccola parte dotata dell’ambito quadrante John Player Special. Questi orologi erano per lo più dotati di quadranti neri con filiali dorate o di quadranti dorati con filiali nere.

Negli ultimi sessant’anni, il Rolex Daytona non ha mai smesso di stupire i collezionisti e gli appassionati anche per le variazioni dei quadranti tra cui il quadrante esotico “Paul Newman”. Tuttavia, la variante ‘leggendaria’ perché in un numero così limitato di esemplari è la John Player Special che per il quadrante nero, i quadranti secondari dorati e il bordo esterno ricorda la vettura di Formula Uno del Team Lotus da cui prende il nome.

The extraordinary timepiece has not undergone any servicing by Rolex

The Rolex Daytona is making waves again, this time for being auctioned at Sotheby’s Geneva for CHF 2,238,000 / $2,491,655. The new world record involves the 1969 Daytona John Player Special, an exceptional reference 6241 “The best seen on the market in the last 10 years or more,” as stated by Mikael Wallhagen, Sotheby’s Geneva Watch Manager, who added, “When I had this 1969 Daytona John Player Special in my hands, I knew immediately that it was an extremely special piece. Not only because of its sought-after reference, but also because it was and still is the best example of this reference I have ever seen. A sentiment that has echoed among watch enthusiasts and especially Daytona collectors wherever it has been displayed, during its travels to our world headquarters, ahead of today’s sale in Geneva. For a watch almost 55 years old, it is in remarkably good condition, with all its parts intact, and has never been serviced. It also has the advantage of having some of the rarest design elements to be found in any JPS reference. It is a true Daytona unicorn, the perfect way to complement our Important Watches that celebrated Daytona’s 60th anniversary with a series of references from all of its six decades.”

It is believed that 3,000 6241 references were produced and only 300 with 18-carat yellow gold cases. Of these, only a small portion equipped with the coveted John Player Special dial. These watches were mostly equipped with black dials with gold branches or gold dials with black branches.

Over the past sixty years, the Rolex Daytona has never ceased to amaze collectors and aficionados alike with dial variations including the exotic ‘Paul Newman’ dial. However, the ‘legendary’ variant because in such limited numbers is the John Player Special, which because of its black dial, gold sub dials, and outer rim is reminiscent of the Team Lotus Formula One car from which it takes its name.
